Hegde to clear his stand on Lokpal panel today

Sat, 23rd Apr 2011

New Delhi: Karnataka Lokayukta Santosh Hegde will announce his decision on whether he will continue to be part of the Lokpal Bill drafting committee on Saturday.

Hegde, one of the five civil society members, will first meet the others before announcing his decision.

He is a former Supreme Court judge and said he wanted to quit the panel after Congress leader Digvijaya Singh accused him of being ineffective in battling corruption in Karnataka.

Since his declaration, Hegde has met with much support and has been under enormous pressure from members of the civil society not to step down.

Karnataka Lokayukta Santosh Hegde on Thursday said he was reconsidering his decision to be on the joint drafting committee on Lokpal Bill, apparently upset over the vilification campaign against the anti-graft panel.

Speaking to CNN-IBN, Hegde said, "I am considering quitting the Lokpal panel".

The former Supreme Court Judge, known for his vigorous campaign against corruption, said the current vilification campaign had put him off. Hegde said he was very hurt by the campaign going on against the Lokpal panel.
